, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom, America's highest civilian honor, to luminaries including former President Bill Clinton, talkshow host Oprah Winfrey, as well as posthumously to former senator Daniel Inouye and first female astronaut of the country Sally Ride.

In a White House ceremony, Obama called the recipients "true champions
," and talked in personal terms about the recipients' contribution to society.

Obama complimented Clinton for his work in promoting charity and "lifesaving work around the world," while thanking him for " the advice and counsel that you've offered me."

Clinton criticized the fumbled Obamacare rollout recently, saying Obama should honor his promise that if people like their policies, they can keep those policies by modifying the Affordable Care Act.

The recipients of this year's award also include Ben Bradlee, executive editor of The Washington Post in the Watergate era, as well as Ernie Banks
, one of the greatest baseball players in the country, former senator Richard Lugar and scientists, rights advocates and musicians and sports stars.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is America's highest civilian honor, along with the comparable Congressional Gold Medal bestowed by Congress, presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace
, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the executive order signed by former President John F. Kennedy establishing the Presidential Medal of Freedom, as well as the first ceremony bestowing the honor on an inaugural class of 31 recipients.

Obama is to participate in a wreath-laying ceremony in Arlington National Cemetery later in the day, marking the 50th anniversary of Kennedy's assassination, which falls on Friday.

South Korea's LG Electronics Inc said on Monday it plans to start selling a new premium smartphone from September, hoping the device will help its struggling mobile business recover from disappointing sales.

LG said its V20 device, successor to the V10 that went on sale in October last year
, will be the first product to run on Google's latest version of its Android mobile operating system called Nougat at launch. The company did not disclose further details on the V20.

The firm has two main premium phone series and its G5 phone, launched in March, has had weaker-than-expected sales following initial production difficulties. As a result, the South Korean firm's mobile business reported its fifth straight quarter of operating loss for April-June.

The company said last week the launch of new products, including a successor to the V10, will help its performance improve in the third quarter. Rivals are also pushing new devices to market soon
, however: Samsung Electronics Co Ltd will unveil its next Galaxy Note smartphone on Wednesday, while Apple Inc is expected to launch new iPhones in September.

NEW DELHI, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Over 1,800 travellers including pilgrims have been stranded after landslides hit a highway in northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, officials said Saturday.

The landslides hit Rishikesh-Badrinath highway on Friday evening near Vishnuprayag in Chamoli district, about 303 km east of Dehradun
, the capital city of Uttarakhand.

"Last evening, landslides triggered here, following which Chardham pilgrims visiting Badrinath have been stopped at different places," a police official said, "The highway has been closed for the traffic by district authority between Joshimath and Badrinath."

Badrinath is a Hindu pilgrim site in Uttarakhand.

Local media quoted Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat as saying 1,800 tourists including pilgrims were affected due to highway blockade.

According to officials
, the landslides drifted huge boulders from mountain, resulting in the blockade.

Officials have asked the Border Roads Organisation, which is responsible for building roads and tunnels in the hilly areas, to clear the road and have stopped pilgrims at Joshimath, Pipalkoti and Karnaprayag, the district magistrate confirmed.

"The road will be opened for the traffic by this afternoon today
," a district official said. "The pilgrims have been asked to stay at their places and nor proceed until the road gets cleared."

Uttarakhand has a rugged terrain. Landslides are often triggered from its mountains during frequent rains.
